WONG KA

Conductor 

  Born in Shanghai , Wong Ka is the First prizewinner of the First Macao Youth Music Competition (Violin Section) and became member of the Macao Chamber Orchestra in 1983. Two years later, he was admitted as violin student of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music under the direction of famous Chinese violinist Zheng Shisheng.

  In 1991, Wong Ka furthered his violin study at the University of Tasmania , Conservatory of Music and studied under renowned violinist and educator Professor Jan Sedivka. Aside from being student of the Conservatory, he also worked as Teaching Assistant of Professor Sedivka as well as Concertmaster of the Conservatory's Orchestra. In 1992, he was granted a Postgraduate Diploma in Violin Performance with distinction and then started working as violin player at the Tasmania Symphony Orchestra.

  In 1993, Wong Ka came back to Macao and rejoined the Macao Chamber Orchestra / Macao Symphony Orchestra working as Assistant Concertmaster. He also actively involved in solo recitals and chamber music concerts. In 1994, He participated in the Fifth Macao Arts Festival and in August of the same year, he was chosen to represent Macao in the International Early Music Festival, organized by the Lisbon National Academy of Music in Portugal . Wong Ka has been Concertmaster of the European Baroque Music Youth Orchestra during this festival. In 1997, He has also performed as soloist with the Macao Chamber Orchestra in the Fifth China Art Festival held in Chengdu of the Szechuan Province .

  Aside from violin performance, Wong Ka is always active in music education in Macao . He has been violin instructor of the Music School of the Conservatory of Macao for ten years and he was one of the founders and members of the “Macao Piano Trio” and the “Macao Youth Symphony Orchestra”. He is now violin instructor as well as one of the conductors of this rapid growing music organization. His students have been awarded numerous top-prizes in the previous Macao Youth Music Competitions.

  In 2003, with the sponsorship from the Cultural Institute of the Macao S.A.R. Government, Wong Ka was able to return to Australia to advance his study at the University of Tasmania , Conservatory of Music under the guidance of Professor Sedivka. He majored in violin performance and chamber music performance. He was awarded Masters of Music degree the next year and subsequently admitted as PhD student major in violin performance and conducting. His research interest is Contemporary Violin Education in Australia .
