Wai Sing-fat

Guest Conductor

Wai graduated from the Oboe  Diploma course of The Hong Kong Conservatory of Music, Bachelor Degree course of the music department of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Master Degree course from the School of Business and Administration of The Open University of Hong Kong respectively.

Wai started to learn conducting in 1984 under Miran Kojian from the course firstly offered by the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. Being a conductor, Wai had worked with numerous orchestras. Among them, Wai and a group of young musicians founded the Hong Kong Music Lover Chinese Orchestra (HKMLCO) in 1979.  Under Wai’s baton, the HKMLCO had performed widely in Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Mainland China, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia and USA. The CD won a ‘Golden Disc’ Award. As a guest conductor, Wai had worked with Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, Hong Kong Youth Chinese Orchestra, Malaysia Professional Cultural Center Orchestra, Australia Chao Feng Chinese Orchestra, China Youth Chinese Music Orchestra of the Beijing Central Conservatory of Music, China Tianjin Symphony Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra of Xinghai Conservatory of Music in Guangzhou, Musicians of All Saints in Britain With the invitation from organizations such as Hong Kong Composers' Guild, Wai conducted the premiere of a number of modern compositions. Wai maintained keen interest in training youth orchestras, he has trained the Children Chinese Orchestra in Summer Camp organized by the Hong Kong Government Music Office. In 2010, Wai was appointed as Music Director by the Tsuen Wan Arts Festival to organise and conduct combined orchestra formed by members from Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Macau and Taipei.

Being an instrumentalist, Wai had been employed as a freelance oboe player by the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra since the time he was studying in the conservatory.  He had also performed actively in chamber music.  Being a Dizi player, he had frequently performed overseas including around the world. In 1983, being a member of “Hong Kong Elite”, Wai played Erhu/ koudi and participated in the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod in Wales and won 3rd prize in the International Folk Solo/Group Competition. In 2010, he was assigned as music director of the music camp and gala performance in Tsuen Wan Arts Festival.

Wai also played various roles in the arts scene.  He was appointed as the trustee of Hong Kong Jockey Club Music and Dance Fund, artistic advisor of Urban Council, member of the Cantonese Opera Advisory Committee, vice president of the Hong Kong Bamboo Flute Society, director of Hong Kong Chinese Instrumental Music Association. Wai had been the advisor of the BA and MA courses in Music for the Hong Kong Baptist University, artistic advisor of Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra and many other organizations.  Wai had also been invited to be the adjudicator of various forms of music competition, and he had given lectures and workshops in various universities, Government Music Office and other organizations.
