Michael Ma is appointed as the Head of Strings at the Hong Kong Academy of Performing
Arts since 1996 and prior to his appointment he was the Professor of Violin
at the University of Oklahoma . He has appeared frequently as soloist, and held
the position of concertmaster with many orchestras including the Oklahoma Symphony
Orchestra, the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, the Santa Fe Opera Orchestra,
the Mainly Mozart Festival, San Diego and the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra.

Leung Kin Fung received the “Ten Outstanding Young Persons Award” in Hong Kong in 2002. Leung was the first Hong Kong musician to win the first prize at the “1992 Young Artist Competition” in New York. He also won the second prize at “The 19th William Primrose International Viola Competition” in 1991. He was listed in the “Who’s Who in the HKSAR” published by Sing Tao Publishing Ltd in 2004. He was commended for making outstanding achievements in the promotion of arts and culture, under the Secretary for Home Affairs’ Commendation Scheme 2005.
Mr. Leung enjoys a world-class reputation, as demonstrated by his frequent performances in Italy, Belgium, UK, Russia, Taiwan, Korea, Japan and other Asian cities and many American cities, as well as regular concerto performances with orchestras. Since 1989, Leung has held many important posts, including membership of the violin faculty at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music in New York from 1989-92, where he had served in 1990 as its Director of Chamber Music. From 1993-99, he acted as the Associate Concertmaster for the National Symphony Orchestra of Taiwan and joined the faculty of the National Institute for the Arts and the Music Department of Fu Jen Catholic University. Since 2000, Leung has been the First Associate Concertmaster of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. He has also served on the faculty of The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Leung has been the Artistic Director of Music Chamber since 2002, organizing and participating in numerous music activities held by Music Chamber. In 2005, together with the Chairman of Music Chamber, Leung founded Hong Kong Pure Strings and acts as Artistic Director of the ensemble. In 2005 and 2006, Mr. Leung also was invited to be the guest concertmaster for both Macau Orchestra and Hamburg Symphoniker, Germany.
Born in China, Leung learnt violin at an early age, and gave his first public performance at the age of eight. He moved to Hong Kong in 1979, and was later admitted by The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts due to his outstanding achievement. In 1986, he was awarded a full scholarship to study at the Eastman School of Music in the U.S.A. He obtained both his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees of Music from the Manhattan School of Music. Leung continued his studies at the Juilliard School with a full scholarship.
Leung performs on the “Markees” made by the great Italian violin maker Antonio Stradivari in 1701, a priceless instrument sponsored by Music Chamber.

Ray Wang joined the Academy in 1994. He has performed throughout the musical
centers and festivals in China , Hong Kong , Taiwan and Macau . His performances
have taken him also to Chicago , Cremona , Florence , London , Luxembourg ,
New York , Saarbrucken , Segovia and Vancouver . He is an active chamber musician,
and is a founding member of the Hong Kong Virtuosi, Canzone Trio and New Art
String Quartet in Hong Kong ; which received support from the Composers and
Authors Society of Hong Kong Music Fund and Hong Kong Arts Development Council.
He was previously a music faculty member of the Baptist University and Chinese
University of Hong Kong ; other teaching activities included Queensland Conservatorium
of Music in Australia , Fu Jen Catholic University of Taiwan and Wuhan Conservatory,
Xinghai Conservatory, Central Conservatory of Music in China . His students
have enjoyed a wide range of successful careers in music, and have won top prizes
in such cello competitions as the 1994 International Heran Violoncello Competition,
the 2001 Hong Kong Competition for Young Asian Musicians, the 2002 International
Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians as well as the National Cello Competition
of China in 1997, 2000 and 2004.

Jun Yi Ma was born in Shanghai in 1972 and commenced studying the violin at the age of six with Professor Ding at the Shanghai Conservatorium. At nine years of age he gave his first performance for television and in the following ear he appeared as soloist with both the Singapore, Thailand, Japan, Czechoslovakia, Canada and the United States.
At 12 he played at the White House for the President of the United States and following that was invited by Jasha Heifitz to have some lessons with him. In the same year he won first prize for solo violin at the Prague Spring Youth International Competition and his Piano Trio was awarded 3rd prize in the Chamber music section. In 1989, Jun Yi was the inaugural concertmaster of the Asian Youth Orchestra, founded by Yehudi Menuhin and Yo-Yo Ma. Masterclass appearances with Dorothy De Lay also followed. He was awarded 2nd prize in the National Violin Competition of China and won the Shanghai Conservatorium Annual Competition for 5 consecutive years. He has made two compact discs featuring music of Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Sarasate and Britten.
In 1990 he re-located to Hobart, Tasmania where he furthered his studies with Jan Sedivka and was the recipient of the Bernard Mitchell Award for 3 years(1990~92) In that same period Jun Yi gave two recitals for broadcast by ABC FM and performed as a contact player with the Tasmanian Symphony. In 1992 he was Concertmaster and soloist with the Australian Virtuoso Chamber Orchestra at the Australian Festival of Chamber Music in Townsville. His solo performances at the festival were selected for broadcasting by New York Radio.
In 1993, Jun Yi won the New Zealand International Brass, Woodwind and String Solo Competition. He has twice been a finalist in the ABC Young Performers Award. Futher studies followed at the Sydney Conservatorium with Charmian Gadd and John Harding. He was appointed to the first violin section of the Sydney Symphony in 1997.
Jun Yi was appointed as Concertmaster of the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra in 2002. Since this appointment Jun Yi has also appeared as regular guest Concertmaster with the Jun Yi had the honour of making three separate live broadcasts of solo and chamber music on ABC Classic FM’s Sunday Live segment.
Jun appeared as soloist with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra in 2004 and acted as musical director for performances in a state tour. He iss also remain a member of the teaching staff at the Tasmanian University Conservatorium of Music acting as violin teacher and string co-ordinator for the Graduate Diploma of Music.

Ho Kwok-Chee Karey - Cello

Karey received her Bachelor Degree with First Class Honours and Professional Diploma from Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in 2004 and 2005, under the tutelage of Professor Ray Wang. In 2006, she was awarded the Molly McAulay Memorial Scholarship to study at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music with the Danish cellist Georg Pedersen. Upon completion of her Master Degree in Sydney, Karey returned to Hong Kong and has since been a part-time staff at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. In addition, she joined Hong Kong Sinfonietta as one of its contracted musicians in July 2007.
She has given numerous performances overseas and has participated in various international music festivals, such as the Asian Youth Orchestra (2002) and the International Summer Academy of the University Mozarteum, Salzburg (2003). In Summer 2003, her string quartet performed in Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, France and United Kingdom as part of the “Re-launching Hong Kong” project held by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Brussels). Other overseas performances included the Hong Kong Sinfonietta’s European Tour to France and Lithuania in 2005 and performances at the festival La Folle Journee au Japon in 2007.
Active in chamber music playing, Karey gave performances of piano trios and string quartets while studying at the Academy. Recently, she devotes a lot of time in playing cello ensemble and has gone on a tour to Taiwan with the Cellistra in April 2007.

Hong Kong International Cello Association (HKICA) is a registered non-profit
organization. It is established by a group of outstanding young cellists in
2005. The association aims at promoting the cello through a variety of performing
activities such as interflows and concerts. In less than a year, the association
has performed in Hong Kong , Macau and Guangzhou . In 2006 summer, the HKICA
also is the co-presenter of "The 2nd National Ai Qin Bei Cello Competition" which
the jointly presented by the Chinese Musician Association Cello Society and
the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing . Invited by LCSD, the government
of HKSAR, the association hosted a theme concert, "Entering the World of
the Cello" in March 2007. |

Born in China into a family of musicians, twenty-year-old
cellist Xiong Yin enjoyed a rich life studying the
cello with her parents from an early age. At the age
of nine, Xiong Yin entered the primary school, and
subsequently continued in the middle school affiliated
to the Shanghai Conservatory.
In August 2000, Xiong Yin won the Second
Prize and the Best Performance Award in the Youth Division
of the 4 th National Cello Competition of China. She
was admitted the following year to the Hong Kong Academy
for Performing Arts, where she studies the cello with
Professor Ray Wang.
While studying at the Academy, Xiong
Yin won the 5th Prize in the 4th International Tchaikovsky
Competition for Young musicians in 2002 and was winner
of the Canton International Summer Music Academy 's
(CISMA) Concerto Competition in 2005. She has also
been awarded several major scholarships, including
the Society of the Academy for Performing Arts Non-Local
Scholarship, the Hong Kong Bank Foundation Hong Kong-Mainland
Exchange Scholarship and the Duchess of Kent International
Scholarship.
Xiong Yin has performed cello concertos with the Academy
Symphony Orchestra and the Xiamen Symphony Orchestra.
In 2006, she performed under the baton of Maestro Edo
de Waart, it was her debut with the joint Hong Kong Philharmonic
Orchestra and Academy Symphony Orchestra. During the
same year, Xiong Yin was chosen to be a member of the
Pacific Music Festival in Japan , and also she was the
principal cellist of the orchestra.

Feng Rong has been a member of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra since the
2001. Prior to joining the bass section of the HKPO,
she served as Principal Bassist of the Hong Kong Sinfonietta
at 2000. In the summer of 2001, she performed as Assistant
Principal Bass at the Pacific Music Festival in Japan.
Originally from China, Feng Rong came to Hong
Kong to attend the Hong Kong Academy of the Performing
Arts in 1997 under a full scholarship. Throughout
all her years of study at the APA, she played Principal
Bass in the Hong Kong Academy Chamber Orchestra and
Hong Kong Academy Symphony Orchestra, and also she
won the concerto competition, Performed ‘Bottsini
Double Concerto for Double bass and Violin’ with
Academy Symphony Orchestra.
While a student, she played a concert with members
of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra for the Hong
Kong and Berlin Goethe Exchange. In addition, she
has also performed on a tour to Bangkok and Hanoi,
in Austria, Italy, and Holland at the Carinthia Festival,
in France at the Casal Festival, and in Barcelona
and London. Following her studies in Hong Kong, she
was offered full scholarships to both Boston University
and Boston Conservatory for study Master degree in
U.S.A.
Feng Rong has studied privately with Eddie Zong,
Principal Bassist of the Hong Kong Phiharmonic Orchestra.
Martin Dobner, Principal Bassist of the German Radio
Symphony, Owen Lee, Principal Bassist of the Cincinnati
Symphony Orchestra, Harbart Mayer, Principal Bassist
of the Vienna Philharmonic, Dennise Trembly, Principal
Bassist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra.
Feng Rong has worked with worldwild great artist,
such as Charles Dutoit, David Atherton, Jose Carreras,
Vadim Repin, Renee Fleming, Yo Yo-Ma, Hilarry Hahn,
Joshua Bell, Chantal Juillet, Wang-jian, Marin Ion,
Lu Jia, Rizzi Carlo.
She has taught as a music instructor at Hong
Kong Academy of the Performing Arts and The Macau
Youth Symphony Orchestra Association since 2000.

Born into a family of music, Yuanyuan started to play piano at the age of four and at the age of six she was already the third prize winner of a provincial children’s piano competition. In 1994, Yuanyuan won the first prize in Hong Kong Piano Competition and the first prize of the advanced category in the First Yamaha Piano Competition for Young Children. Yuanyuan had her father as her first flute instructor when she was 12. She had lived up to the expectation of her father when she was admitted with the highest score by the Middle School affiliated with Xinghai Conservatory of Music in 1996 and majored in flute. While studying at school she was tutored by Huang Yong and Yan Qi. During her school time she was very lucky to be instructed by Shigenori Kudo, a jury member of international competition, Mr. Alexandra Magnin, a flute professor of Zurich Conservatory of Music, and various professors at China Central Conservatory of Music and Shanghai Conservatory of Music. In 2001, she gave her first solo concert at the Music Hall of Xinghai Conservatory of Music which was a great success. In 2002, she was admitted with high marks by Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris, Conservatory of Music of Canberra and Xinghai Conservatory of Music.
In 2002, Yuanyuan went to Paris to pursue her music study at Ecole Normale Super Paris with full scholarship. There she was tutored by Claudine•Desjardins-Clautour, a professor of flute, and Pierre•Yves-Artaud, a tenured professor at Concervatoire National Superieur Musique de Paris who is a leading master in modern flute playing as well as an excellent educator. Yuanyuan has since won a series of honors, including the first prize of Flute at the Tenth European Musical Contest, first prize of the Advanced Category at Lutece Flute Competition, second prize of the Advanced Category at UFUM International Flute Competition, second prize of the Honorary Category at UFUM International Chamber Music Contest and first prize of the Advanced Category at Concours “Les Cles d’Or”, the third prize of the Youth Category at the National Flute Contest for Music Students held by the Educational Department of China Ministry of Culture, the third prize at the Second International Competition of Young Musicians in Belgrade. In 2005, YUANYUAN was granted the Higher Education Diploma of Chamber Music and the Higher Education Diploma of Flute.
While in Paris, she often attended master classes and appeared in various performances. She had performed often with Alternance Ensemble, a French modern chamber music ensemble, as the first flute and with O.F.F, a French modern flute orchestra. She was invited by the Mayor of Bad Goisern, Austria to give solo concerts in Austria. She performed on stage with Peter Brugger, the well known Austrian pianist. Her solo concerts were well received and highly appraised by the music circle and media in Austria. Mr. Messin. Irmgard, a flute professor at Mozart Conservatory of Music in Salzburg spoke highly of her master of flute art when she took his master classes.
Yuanyuan is currently an instructor of flute in the String and Pipe Department of Xinghai Conservatory of Music. She also serves as the first flute in the Orchestra of Xinghai Conservatory of Music.

Chong started learning clarinet when he was 10. Later, he was admitted by the Chinese University of Hong Kong, studying psychology and French. After receiving his Bachelor degree in psychology, he was accepted by the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, where he obtained Advanced Diploma for Performing Arts (Music) and Professional Diploma for Performing Arts (Music) with distinction. His teachers included John Schertle, Michael Campbell and Anthony Wong. He also learned chamber music from Yiu Song Lam. He has performed with the Macau Orchestra as well as the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2004, he won the First prize of the Second Asian Youth Music Competition and a scholarship financed by Bernard van Zuiden Music Fund, under which he furthered his studies in the Royal Conservatory, The Hague, the Netherlands where he learned clarinet with Sjef Douwes who is the Principal Clarinet of the renowned Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. He also studied bass clarinet with the famous soloist and chamber musician David Kweksilber and Professor Erik van Deuren from Conservatory of Amsterdam, who plays regularly in the world-famous Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. He even has the honour to be in the class of the legendary bass clarinetist Harry Sparnaay. Moreover, he has participated in masterclasses of Andrew Marriner, Michel Lethiec, Jean-Noël Crocq, Yves Didier and Henri Bok. In summer of 2006, he was awarded the post-graduate certificate from the Royal Conservatory, The Hague, the Netherlands with distinction and is now devoted himself to teaching and promoting chamber music in Hong Kong. He is the founding member of the ensemble "Hong Kong Wind Kamerata" and is now the clarinet lecturer and chamber music coach of the Macau Youth Symphony Orchestra.

Born
in Hong Kong , Yiu graduated from the Hong Kong Academy
for Performing Arts. In 1987, he Participated in the
1st Macau International Festival as a soloist, performing
with the Goldberg Ensemble from England . In 1989 he
was awarded the Hong Kong Jockey Club Scholarship to
study at the Queensland Conservatorium, the Royal Academy
of Music, London , the Rotterdam Conservatorium, Holland
and the Koln Musikhochschule, Germany , where he was
awarded the Diploma der Künstlerischen Abschuβprüfung
with distinction in 1994. His teachers include Anthony
Camden, Celia Nicklin, George Caird, Emanuel Abbühl
and Christian Schneider. He has attended the classes
of Ingo Goritzki, Thomas Indermühle, Lothar Koch, Hansjorg
Schellenberger and Maurice Bourgue. He has performed
at festivals in Japan , Canada , England , Holland
, Franc , Spain , Germany , Italy and Salzburg in Austria
.
During his stay in Europe , he performed intensively
as a chamber musician. He appeared often as a soloist
and participated in composers' presentation concerts
such as the International Society of Contemporary Music
(ISCM) in 1988 and 2002. As a member of the baroque
ensemble “Conjunto Hemiola”, he was invited to perform
at the International Summer Festival “Quincena Musical”
in San Sebastián , Spain , in 1996. He has been invited
to perform with the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields
under the baton of Sir Neville Marriner on their Hong
Kong tour.
Being the most active oboe teacher and performer in Hong
Kong , he has also been invited by the Xian Conservatory,
the Guangzhou Conservatory and the Macau Culture Department
to give oboe masterclasses and be adjudicator for various
music Competitions. Between 1998 and 2003, he was the
Co-Principal Oboe and Solo English Horn of the Hong Kong
Sinfonietta. As a founding member and chairman of Les
Six, he is also the overseas consultant of the Macao
Youth Orchestra. Currently he is the oboe lecturer and
chamber music coach at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing
Arts ,the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Hong
Kong Baptist University .

Chin Hing Sang was born in Hong Kong. He graduated at the Chinese University
of Hong Kong in 1989. From 1990 to 1995 he studied
at the Vienna State Academy of Music under Prof. Dietmar
Zeman. Besides, he also participated in Bassoon masterclasses
held by Valerie Popov, William Waterhouse, Karl Ohlberger
and John Orford; as well as the masterclass in Bassoon
reed making by Andreas Weigmann, the most famous Bassoon
reed maker in Germany.
In Vienna he was granted a scholarship by the Ziehrer-Stiftung.
In 1993 and 1994 he was bassoonist in the Junge Oper
Austria and Totales Theater Wien respectively. Since
1995 he is principal Bassoon of Hong Kong Sinfonietta.
1997/98 he was granted a scholarship by the Hong
Kong Jockey Club, Music and Dance Fund. In June 1998
he obtained the degree of Master of Arts with unanimous
distinction at the Vienna State Academy of Music,
and received an honorary prize from the Austrian
Ministry of Education. He is one of the founding
members of “Les Six” and is also the overseas consultant
of Macao Youth Orchestra. He has given master classes
in Macao and Guangzhou Conservatory. Being one of
the leading bassoonists in Hong Kong, he has been
very active in the concert halls of Hong Kong as
well as in Macao, Singapore, Japan, USA, France,
Poland, Lithuania and Austria. He has appeared as
soloist with Hong Kong Sinfonietta. He has now resumed
his position in Hong Kong Sinfonietta, and currently
teaching at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing
Arts, the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the
Hong Kong Institute of Education.

Lee Siu Lam, Homer
– Horn

Homer
Lee joined the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra in
1987, and has been on the faculty of the Hong Kong
Academy for Performing Arts since 1988. In addition
to his teaching duties there, he also conducts the
Academy's Junior Symphony Orchestra.
Homer has studied with many internationally renowned
hornists including Cheryl Hoard, Roland Pandolfi, Alan
Civil, Dale Clevenger, David Krehbiel and Derek Taylor.
He has won many major prizes including the Royal Hong
Kong Jockey Club Scholarship from 1983 to 1985 and
the Lady MacLehose Prize to study at the Banff School
of Fine Arts ( Canada ) in 1985.
Being an active horn player and teacher in Hong Kong
, Homer can be heard on many of the music appreciation
programs broadcasted on the television and radio, and
has done extensive studio recordings. He had been invited
to perform with the world famous Orchestra of the Academy
of St. Martin-in-the-Fields during their visit in Hong
Kong . Since 1996, Homer has been invited by the Macao
Culture Department to give horn master classes, workshops,
wind quintet concert and be adjudicator for the Youth
Music Competition in Macao Youth Music Festival.

Law Siu Yi, Olivia - Horn
|
|
Law Siu Yi, Olivia was borned in Hong Kong (China) where she started to study horn with Joe Kirtley, the former hornist in the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, and the current lecturer at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.
In 1999 and 2000 she played two public recitals and graduated with Advanced Diploma and Professional Diploma in Performing Arts(Music).
She taught French horn from 1998 to 2004. She also took horn lessons with Homer Lee, the current third horn in the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra before she went to Lugano(Switzerland) to study. She also participated in some masterclasses of the American Horn Quartet, Frank Lloyd, Timothy Brown and Michael Thompson.
She played horn in some orchestras such as The New Philarmonia of Hong Kong, The Hong Kong Chamber Orchestra, The Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra, Arcadia Orchestra(Switzerland), Orchestra da camera di Lugano (Switzerland). Orchestra del Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana (Switzerland).
When she was studying in Hong Kong and Switzerland, she also worked with several famous conductors such as Sir Neville Marriner, Joseph Silverstein, George Tintner, Alfred Reed, Lu Jia and Krijn Koetsveld.
She studied with Professor David W. Johnson, member of the American Horn Quartet and Sandro Ceccarelli, the first horn of the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano G. Verdi from 2004 to 2007 and graduated with Performance Diploma.

Sally
Ng started her French horn training at her age of 15
with Mr. Simon Yau at Music Office. Hereafter, she
joined the Hong Kong Youth Symphonic Band and the Hong
Kong Youth Symphony Orchestra. From 1989, she participated
in the Hong Kong Music Festival and won an award in
the class of French horn solo in three consecutive
years. She also won the overall championship.
Sally entered the Hong Kong Academy for Performing
Arts 1993 and received her Diploma, Advanced Diploma
and Professional Diploma. Her teachers included Joe
Kirtley, Kim Kelly and Homer Lee.
During the time of Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts,
she was also active in chamber music and was coached
by Margaret Lynn and Margaret Crawford. In addition,
she also attended the master class by Michael Thompson,
Frank Lloyd and the American French horn Quartet, and
attained the high praise. After graduation, she was invited
by the Hong Kong Temporary Urban Council to have her
debut recital in the Young Musicians series. Sally frequently
participates in the City Chamber of Hong Kong and the
Hong Kong Sinfonietta. She also made a guest principal
and instructor with the Penang Symphony Orchestra in
Malaysia .

Fung
Kai Man joined the Hong Kong Youth Orchestra at the
age of 14 and performed in its concert tour of France
and England . He studied with Mr. Henry Nowak at the
Hong Kong Academy for the Performing Arts and was among
its very first graduates in 1987. Since then he has
performed with various orchestras in Hong Kong and
Macau including the City Symphony Orchestra, the Lim
Kek Han Concert Orchestra and the Macau Chamber Orchestra.
Fung is a founding member of the Hong Kong Sinfonietta
and has been its principal trumpet since 1990. He
has also been engaged as solo trumpet in performmances
of the concerti of Haydn and Hummel, the Bach Brandenburg Concerto No. 2,
Copland's Quiet City , Shostakovich Piano Concerto
No. 1 and various other pieces from the Baroque repertoire.
Fung is also active in teaching and conducting.
He has been conducting the school orchestra and band
of the CCC Kei Wan Primary School for 17 years. His
students and groups have been frequent prize winners
in the H.K. Schools Music Festivals and the H.K.
Band Festivals. He has also taught at the Music Office
and the Academy for the Performing Arts and has been
invited by the Instituto Cultural de Macau to host
workshops on brass instruments in Macau .
In 2001, Fung has given a recital of 19th Century
cornet virtuoso pieces in the Macau Band Fair on
authentic instruments.
